oh, sammy
What is it with me and guys named Sam?

Anyway, I totally ODed on True Blood (the show, not the drink). Watched the entire first season yesterday, plus the season two premiere.

First of all, let's start with me and Sam Merlotte. I knew it the moment I saw him, I was like,"That's my new TV boyfriend." And like I said, me and guys named Sam--it wasn't anything surprising. See Sam Winchester. See Sam Anders. Now this guy. Sheesh. Know what else they have in common? Normal, nice guy who has deep dark secret about an identity he wants to stay hidden. See demon king. See Cylon. See shapeshifter. I'm so predictable. *sigh*

And now this other dude, Eric? Three words. I. GET. IT. For almost a year, my friends list was raving about this character and the actor. Now I see why. It's been awhile since I had a blonde-haired, blue-eyed smug SOB that I love to hate (I still love ya, Sark). Although he might kill me for laughing at his bar's name--Fangtasia? Really?

Please tell me I'm not the only one BORED with Sookie/Bill. I know that girl has some trauma in her life, but I wanted to slap her more than once. And Bill? The only time I like him is when he's with other vampires esp. Jessica. Haha. Now that girl can stick around only because she gets on everyone's nerves and I love seeing their reactions to her.

I totally cried when Sookie's grandmother died. I cried a couple times with Tara and her mother.

Oh! One of my favorite scenes from the first season is Sookie eating her grandmother's pie. From a writer's POV, I totally loved the cue they put in about that, when earlier, Tara and Lafayette were looking through the food people brought over and talked about how you can tell when something is made with love. So, when Sookie broke down while eating her grandmother's pie--I cried with her.

I would really love to see more Sookie and Jason together as brother and sister. Another one of my favorite scenes is in the first episode when Sookie tries to read Jason's mind and he lashes out at her to not try that stuff with him because he's her brother. I want more siblings! Half the time, it feels like Jason is on another TV show with all his subplots (first the V, now this church thing).

Let's take a moment to talk about Jason Stackhouse. That boy. Wow. When I said Sookie had trauma in her life, now that boy has trauma. The last three girls he sleeps with ends up as corpses and he thinks he killed them. He gets into vampire drugs. He falls in love, only to have the girl murdered. His best friend ends up being the killer. What else? Oh, yeah, the whole needle up his dick...ew. Sure, he may be stupid and clueless, but after all that, he deserves some happiness in his life. I do think he's smarter than he looks and acts. I really want to see what the writers have planned for his character arc.

And dude, Jason and Sam always in those T-shirts, plaid shirts, jeans, and those huge belt buckles--hot.

Now, the other Stackhouse...Sookie. There's something about her--ugh. First, it's, "We need to stay away from each other, Bill." (five seconds later) "I love you, Bill!" cue sex montage. Then, the way she goes back and forth with Bill and Sam. I thought it was bad with Kate and Jack and Sawyer. There's also the whole Marissa Cooper (The OC) vibe I get, where the whole world revolves around you and the only problems that matter are your own. For example, her friendship with Tara. Whenever Tara wants to talk about her stuff, it always seems to go back to Sookie's problems. Now, Sookie can be stupid too, like when she thinks Sam is the killer and runs away to hide in the shower. Uh, what? She doesn't even think to run outside?

Oh, and the way Anna Paquin runs is annoying (the way her arms kinda flail at her side) and the way Bill says, "Sookie" is annoying too.

Rene as the killer was surprising, but it didn't seen inevitable so I kind of felt disappointed. I may have missed them, but were there any cues that Rene may be the killer? Nothing was really planted early on, so, him as the killer didn't really make sense to me.

I have no idea who or what this Mary Ann person is or how she's connected with Sam and why she's interested in Tara. Blame SPN, but I did think she was this deal-making demon. She gives you whatever you want, but in the end, she gets your soul or something. All that fruit and food on the table reminds me of those stories where if you eat from it (temptation), there's a price to pay. And blame BSG for this one, but the actress played the same kind of character on that show (evil, scary bitch), so, it's hard for me to enjoy her in this role.

And, um, Sam's backstory is way more tragic than Bill's backstory--just saying.

You know, ten years ago, I probably would have been all over Bill Compton and Sookie/Bill. I did love Buffy/Angel and all. I just find it kind of strange that kind of relationship doesn't do anything for me anymore. Oh, well. I'll always have Sam...or a Sam :)

So. Come on, people! Talk True Blood with me!

Did you notice Raelle Tucker recycling my favorite Max Miller line, "Nothing says 'I'm sorry' like a tuna casserole"?

sfjskld I think our opinions on almost everything are directly opposing -- I hate Jason Stackhouse and he everything he does and says makes me want to claw my own eyes out, I love Sookie and Anna Paquin, Eric makes me roll my eyes because he's everything I hate about vampire cliches (I LIKE HIS HOT ASSISTANT OR W/E, PAM), I enjoy Bill and Sam really does nothing for me (although I don't really care either way about Bill/Sookie -- I wanted them to be some kind of ultimate OTP but they... aren't really?), Jessica is a little over the border of annoying for me, but I don't mind her. I'm like the only person who doesn't really care for Lafayette either. I mean, he's okay! He's interesting! I just don't get why people flail over him. I don't really like this MaryAnn stuff either though.

I enjoy True Blood (I'm dling 202 now!) in general but I think it's mainly because I like Sookie. I haven't read the books, though.

Sorry, but I don't know who Max Miller is. Does that make me less cool?

Haha. Interesting...nothing against Anna Paquin, but it's more of the character as opposed to the actress. Although she and Stephen Moyer have very little chemistry and they're supposed to be dating in real life? How is that possible?

:( Oh, Max Miller was the pasty guy from SPN 114, "Nightmare," the one who had telekinesis and was killing his family for abusing him...

Good lord, I can't stand Sookie, which is creating a problem- it's hard to watch a show when you can't stand the main character. I liked her in the pilot, and I like Sookie in the books, but she is insufferable on the show.

MMMMM ERIC.

Yeah, I liked her a lot in the pilot when she was actually, you know, thinking. I liked it when she was wary of Bill (using the silver chains and stuff), but now she has this blind trust in him.

MMMMM ERIC indeed. Dude. THOSE ARMS! I forgot to mention the tank tops--guh!

I agree with a lot of this. I don't dislike Sookie/Bill but there are things about Bill that I'm not fond of (and things about Sookie I'm not fond of) and sometimes I think they'd be more interesting apart than together. (And hey maybe build up some tension or something rather than just going for it all the time.)

I agree, I love Sam. LOVE. And I liked his relationship with Tara last season but I don't think I particularly ship them. Or Sookie/Sam. I just like Sam, what can I say?

And I, on the contrary, as always, DO NOT GET the whole Eric thing. Just... blech. I can't explain it he just does nothing for me. No, that's not true. That would reflect indifference. He pretty much has the opposite effect on me he seems to have on everyone else. (His new hair is better though.) And I'm almost done with book four and he's only mildly better in the books, imo. He's super popular among the book fans as well. So clearly, I am missing something fundamental about dear Eric. PAM on the other hand, amuses me to no end. Love that girl.

I also really like the whole Jessica thing. A lot. I think the actress is great and she brings a lot to the table. The whole dynamic. Especially because she was so convincing before Bill turned her. That just makes the 180 really awesome to watch. I think I'm going to enjoy seeing what happens with her.

Jason makes it hard to feel sorry for him. Hopefully he comes to his senses before he gets in too deep with the children of the sun or whatever the frak they're called. I really like that they're reminding us how guilty he feels about Eddie and how he realizes that Eddie was a good person first, and a vampire second. Part of him joining this group has got to be about making himself feel better about what he did, feel justified. But that's clearly not going to work.

Maryanne is creepy but really hard to dislike. Which is where I feel that she differs immensely from Admiral Cain, so I gotta disagree with you there. It was really really easy to hate Admiral Cain. Intensely so.

I was sad about Rene. I'd read book one by then so I knew it would be him. But they really made the character so likable. The actor was great. I'm sorry we won't see more of him. I think there were a few scenes that kind of hinted. Towards the beginning when he stood up for Sookie in Merlott's kind of forcefully and then afterward when he touches her face, telling her he reminds her of his little sister. Small things like that.

Yes! Tension! That's totally what is missing. It never got to build. It was basically Bill making Sookie drink from him in the second episode and now they're connected so it has to be true love.

Hehe. I just like Sam too. I do love that he gave Tara the money for the exorcism and even admitted he tried to love her. Gah. What's wrong with me? I usually go for the bad ones. Maybe that's why I like Eric and even Jason--to balance things out :)

The thing I like about Eric is that he doesn't care. To me, Bill is the one filled with vampire cliches. As for Jason, with the whole Amy arc, I did sort of see things from her POV as well as Tara when she had that flashback of him saving her from her mother. And when he turned himself in after he thought he was the killer. There are things underneath the surface that should be explored.

Personally, for me, I would have liked to see another actress play Mary Ann. *shrugs* Like I said, it just feels like she's playing Cain to me and I can't unsee it.

Nice catches on Rene! I liked him too and I was sad to see him as the killer.

Please tell me I'm not the only one BORED with Sookie/Bill.

Bored, bored, bored, bored. Bill's totally a wet towel. It doesn't help that I've read the books either. As an aside, I love Sookie in the books, whereas in the show, I go back and forth. I like that they've made her confused, prone to mistakes, and yet still ultimatley the heroine, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to shake her now and then.

I'm totally on Team Eric. (It may help that I'm a huge fan of Alexander Skarsgard from Generation Kill).

Sam is utterly fantastic. And so adorable. And Eric is my god. =D

Sookie, on the other hand, is incredibly annoying. I think a lot of it is that the books are told from her first person POV, so you get to see the mind behind all the maniacal smiling and faking it to get through the day, which is something that the format of the show precludes. But her blind love of Bill, ignoring all his glaring faults - it gets really old, really fast, book and show. At this point I'm just glad whenever Bill and Sookie are apart, because it usually makes everything about a hundred times more enjoyable.

Oh, good point on the books. We hear everyone else's thoughts on the tv show, but not hers, you know.

And yes, I got tired of her blind love for Bill fast too.

Same here! I had more fun watching Bill with Jessica drinking True Blood and Sookie with Sam. Her chemistry with Sam is 100x more better esp. their banter at the kitchen table eating breakfast ("You're not the boss of me, well, you are" had me laughing! I want more snarky Sookie!) and their day looking for Cindy Marshall.

I LOVE Jason. I never remember his name because I am always busy staring at his often naked ass. mmmm... And I love Sam, too! I tried to read the books when they first came out, and gave up after the second one, because when you hate the main pairing, and one of the main characters (Bill) that much, it's kind of hard to keep reading.

Someone told me Bill and Sookie break up in book 3 or 4 or something, but even that wasn't enough to get me reading again. I did love Eric, but he wasn't on the page enough to make me read.

I just started watching S1, and I have to admit I'm more interested, despite the fact that I dislike Sookie/Bill on my screen almost as much as I did on the page. Having a visual for Eric doesn't hurt, and I do like Sam. :D

I find Sookie sort of "meh" both in the books and on the show, which makes it hard to buy into what all these guys (Bill, Sam, Eric) see in her.

I feel the same way sometimes. Although her telepathy could play a factor in Eric's case, I wish we could get more backstory on Sam and Sookie and more build-up with her and Bill--then I could buy their relationships a little bit more.

Sookie and Bill do break up in the third book, and book four, DEAD TO THE WORLD, should make Eric fans very, very happy. It's my favorite of the series.

But I don't blame you for getting bored with the books. I read the first seven in one fell swoop, and I burnt out really fast (then again, some of that has to do with how Harris is handling her plots and whatnot).

Oh man, this show. I marathoned it too and sometimes the bookishness of the show is very apparent. Did that make sense? I said it to my bff when we first started watching it and she was all O.o but turned to me the next episode after a specific scene (which I now forget) and she said she got it.

There are parts of this show that make me cringe. Like the changing into a WHITE NIGHTGOWN before RUNNING through a CEMETARY AT NIGHT (while barefoot and leaving your front door wide open *facepalm*) to have sex with a vamp. I laughed my ass off and cringed all at the same time. But still isn't as bad as the graveyard!sex. We both cringed, ewwww'd and crossed our leg. OMG, grave dirt up your vajajay ain't my idea of a good time! And how freaking unsanitary?? Eww, ewww, ewww.

I am not much of a Bill/Sookie fan either and I don't understand WHY they have such deep and meaningful "connection". They've never given any reason for it. And obviously it couldn't have been that deep or meaningful cuz Sookie kisses Sam not even 2 days after Bill leaves because he didn't say how soon he would be back? He had to go to Vamp!Court for her! Especially after that scene in the parking lot where he says goodbye? Argh! And Bill's accent and pronunciation of her name is atrocious. Sooukeh is maaahn! And his southern gentleman hair? It's just so silly!

I like Tara, a lot, which is why the last couple of eps in S1 drove me crazy, they made her all unTaralike, it made no sense. She is strong and smart and hurt and has shields made out of all of that hurt and anger. She is so damn prickly and awesome, I don't get her becoming so vulnerable or gullible. I didn't like Sam/Tara in the beginning but then I grew into it. He doesn't take her shit and he isn't Jason. He pays attention to her and is there for her except the whole Sookie thing. If they did it right, I think he would be really good for her.

But I am part of the nonexistent camp that Sam and Bill need to get it on. I mean, Sam carried a burning Bill, while nekkid and buried him while Soooukeh just stood there and cried, making Sam the one to save Bill. I swear, Bill and Sam have more chemistry than B&S. "You're the only one I trust..." anyone? Btw, the casting for Sam was spot on, he totally looks like a puppy.

Btw, I was heartbroken when Rene was revealed as the killer. Why?? He was adorable and had the BEST Cajun accent, EVER. I wanted to listen to him all day long. Though I do like the crazy army dude that's in love with Rene's redhead fiancee.

Oh Jason, that boy. My favourite bit with him has to be his fight with Sooukeh during their grandmother's funeral, that little gesture of frustration that he makes with his hands in his suit pockets? That was adorable and perfect.

I haven't been watching S2 but am being kept informed. I'm glad Lafayette isn't dead. I think he should be vamped and they should change the show into the Lafayette and Eric Variety Hour. How awesome would that be?

Hurrah, another True Blood fan! I just finished my squee post after powering through S1 (haven't seen any of S2 yet).

And yes, Sam is my favourite character as well (well, my favourite non-vamp character). He's just such a sweetheart. I'm not a fan of Sam/Sookie, because she's damned annoying at times, but they do have great banter when it's just the two of them.

And Jason...*sigh* I feel for him, I really do. He's so lost and lonely and messed up. I really love him, even when he's just being the comic relief. I hope he gets some happiness too.

Please tell me I'm not the only one BORED with Sookie/Bill

Lord. I like Sookie more than most people, but not when she's all Bella Swan to Bill's Edward Cullen (with moar sexing). Sometimes she's awesome when she calls him on shit, but that doesn't happen too much. And I hate Bill. HATE. He's like the Vaughn of this show. And the way he says "Suk-eh" drives me up a wall. No love for that couple.

Oh and Eric is totally the Sark of the show. And I love him so much. Rrr...
