SPN Fic: awake and waiting
[info]brin_bailey wrote me Dean/Jo fic for my birthday sleeping and breathing. I gave her the Secondhand Serenade song Stay Close, Don't Go as a prompt.

Anyway, the fic was so good, I wanted to write a version in Jo's POV, so, here it is! Don't worry. I have [info]brin_bailey's seal of approval :) Go read her fic too!

Title: awake and waiting

Character/Pairing: Dean/Jo
Rating: PG-13

1.

She's reading “Of Mice and Men” when she feels him watching her. She looks over Sam's green yard and sees Dean standing on the back porch. The June sun makes her squint, but she doesn't lose sight of his figure in the light.

She smiles and waves him over. He shakes his head and stays on the porch with his beer.

She goes back to her book. Five minutes later, she realizes she's been reading the same sentence over and over.

She can't focus when Dean's still watching her.

She wonders what he's thinking about.

1.5

She started knitting a couple months ago to keep busy. Her hands always have to do something--grabbing longneck bottles, wiping counters, shooting rifles, sharpening knives.

Then, Dean got in the picture--stroking, caressing, holding, touching...

She sits at the kitchen table knitting a sweater for Sam. Dean watches from the door frame, one shoulder leaned against the wall, one hand in his front pocket.

She keeps her head down, concentrating on Sam's sweater, but she peeks through her hair strands to look at Dean. She waits for him to say something.

He doesn't.

But she learned a long time ago when it comes to Dean Winchester, it pays to be patient.

2.

She falls asleep with Dean's hand on her hip.

Her dreams are filled with the sound of his voice.

2.5

She takes one step off the porch, turns to grab Dean's hand, and tells him she used to be scared of losing him.

She doesn't know why she picked this time to admit that. Maybe it's because her fear is gone. She interlaces their fingers, puts her head on his shoulder, and knows he is staying.

3.

Winter arrives with a harsh fury of bitter coldness and endless nights of falling snow.

She shovels the front walk every morning because her hands still need something to do.

Dean watches from the window. She waves. He waves her in, holding up a cup of coffee for her.

At night, her skin is still cold. Dean holds her tight and warms her up from the inside out. The moonbeams jump from the walls and illuminates them as one.

When he kisses her, she sighs.

3.5

Sometimes, after she's done shoveling, she lies down in the snow and makes angels. She flaps her arms up and down, swings her legs the same way, and grins as flakes melt on her lips.

She draws halos around the angels' heads and admires her creations.

Dean stands on the porch with a look on his face. She can't tell if he thinks she's crazy or weird or both. She snuggles into his arms and he presses his smile into her hair.

She looks back at the snow angels. There's a reason why she always makes two.

4.

Spring returns with the growth of green grass and the smell of flowers and dirt.

It's raining when Jo walks into the bedroom. From a distance, there is a clap of thunder. The window is open, blowing in the warm air and drops of rain. She shuts it and that's when she sees what Dean left for her.

Sitting on the nightstand is a small gold ring.

She knows what it is, what it means.

And she knows what her answer is.

She finds Dean outside sitting on the hood of the Impala. The rain soaks through her shirt. She races to him, her bare feet splashing in the puddles.

She stops in front of him, holds up the ring, and waits.

She's waited this long. She can wait a few more seconds.

He laughs and nods. She slides the ring down her finger and it gets stuck on her knuckle. It doesn't matter.

She grabs him, kisses him with her wet mouth, and presses the ring against his cheek. This is what matters.

4.5

“Yes,” she says.

"Stay Close, Don't Go" lyrics

I'm staring at the glass in front of me,
is it half empty of our wins or have i ruined all you've given me?
I know I've been selfish,
I know I've been foolish,
but look through that
and you will see,
I'll do better, I know,
Baby, I can do better.

If you leave me tonight, I'll wake up alone,
don't tell me I will make it on my own,
don't leave me tonight,
this heart of stone will sing till it dies
if you leave me tonight.

Sometimes I stare at you while you are sleeping,
I listen to your breathing,
amazed how I somehow managed to
sweep you off your feet girl,
your perfect little feet girl
I took for granted what you do.
But I'll do better, I know
Baby, I can do better.

If you leave me tonight, I'll wake up alone,
don't tell me I will make it on my own,
don't leave me tonight,
this heart of stone will sing till it dies
if you leave me tonight.

And don't you know my heart is open, oh,
it's putting up the fight,
and I've got this feeling,
that everything's alright,
and don't you see,
I'm not the only one for you
but you're the only one for me.

If you leave me tonight I'll wake up alone,

(stay) If you leave me tonight,
(close) I'll wake up alone,
(don't) don't tell me I will
(go) make it on my own,
(stay) don't leave me tonight,
(close) this heart of stone
(don't) will sing till it dies
(go) if you leave me tonight.
Don't leave me tonight
