_______________________________________

Sawyer walked around the tiny one-story house with a small smile on his face. He was surrounded with picture frames and doilies and wooden knick-knacks.

Junk, he thought.

He picked up a picture of the family. The man was handsome with blue eyes. The woman was blond and willowy. The little boy stared hard at the camera, a mixture of both his father’s ruggedness and his mother’s soft features.

Seeing the family perfectly intact didn’t bother Sawyer. Not anymore. He’d been doing these kinds of jobs for a long time now. They all had victims.

But, they deserved it. If they were stupid enough to fall for the con, then he had no sympathy for them.

“He’s walking up to the door right now.” The blonde from the picture appeared in the room. She wore a long spring dress. It reminded Sawyer of Easter.

He reached out and held her close. “Can I get one last kiss?”

“Sawyer.” She struggled for a second, but gave in, relaxing in his arms.

He kissed her. Soft, quick, but effective.

She sighed and pulled away. “Will this really work?”

He smiled with confidence because that’s what he was. “Trust me.”

**
“You’ve got yourself a deal.” Blondie’s husband stood up and held out his hand.

Sawyer shook it, and with his other hand picked up the suitcase filled with money.

“You won’t regret it,” Sawyer said. “You’ll get your money back in a week. Tripled.”

Blondie and her husband smiled at each other. Sawyer could already picture the vacation the poor fool was imagining taking—somewhere down south, the beach, Disneyworld. Some crap like that.

Blondie touched Sawyer’s arm. “Thanks, Sawyer.”

And Sawyer could picture the vacation she was imagining taking—somewhere on a tropical island sipping margaritas with Sawyer and their share of the profit.

Well, that was crap too.

“Pleasure doing business with you folks.” Sawyer started towards the front door when it suddenly swung open. The kid from the picture ran inside covered in mud.

“What happened to you?” Blondie grabbed her son and gestured to his soiled clothing. “What did I tell you about playing in the woods?”

The boy held up a frog. “But, I found something.”

Blondie grimaced. “Get that away from me, honey.”

The boy looked up at his father. “Can I keep it, Dad? Please?”

“Take it back to where you found it,” his father said.

The boy frowned, and then noticed Sawyer. “Who are you?”

“James.” Blondie knelt down beside him. “Meet Mr. Sawyer.”

Sawyer came down to his level and smiled. “Well, hello, James.”

The boy narrowed his eyes.

Sawyer’s smile grew. This boy knew something was wrong about the stranger in his home. He could see right through Sawyer. Unlike his mother and father. If he knew what was good for him, he would keep Sawyer’s secret.

Sawyer ruffled the boy’s blond hair. “See you later, kid.”

Outside, he turned back to look at the house. He thought about the pictures frames. He thought about the knick-knacks scattered around the living room. And he thought about the kid who had come running through the door covered in mud and carrying a frog in his hands.

The Fords were just another name on his long list of victims, and soon, their faces would blur into others and they would become nameless.

Just like him.

THE END

Oh, I just loved this! Loved it. I totally thought you were writing about "our" Sawyer at first, and then you turned it all around and showed us James as a boy. I could just see it all, the house, the mom, the family pictures. And OMG, that would explain what Sawyer has against frogs!

GREAT use of the prompt. I've been wondering how I was going to fill that one...I think it's the most challenging one of them all. You handled it brilliantly.

Woo! I feel like jumping out of the bushes and going, "GOTCHA!"

Hee. The frog thing was kinda by accident and then I realized it totally fit into that tree frog thing. Esp. after Hurley told him to let it go so it could find a Miss Tree Frog and stuff. If Sawyer can't get his happy family, nothing else can either!

When I read that prompt, this was actually the first scenerio that came into my mind. I'm glad you think I did a good job on it.
